La Capella 2011, from a single-vineyard Xarel\u00b7lo, was even more arresting: 150 months on lees yielded baked apple, coconut, and toasted nut notes, with judges praising its \u2018elegant, mouth-filling\u2019 presence.<\/p>\n<p>Pere Ventura\u2019s Tresor Cuv\u00e9e Barrique (95 points) took Best Value despite its upscale profile, described as having a \u2018developed nose, savoury, briny length, and smoky, mushroomy depth\u2019. Capricho Val de Paxari\u00f1as 2024 (93 points, Best By The Glass) offered a floral nose, bright acidity, and food-friendly weight &#8211; the very definition of a sommelier\u2019s secret weapon.<\/p>\n<p>Its older sibling, Herencia del Capricho 2021 (96 points), was another story altogether. With only 3,000 bottles produced, this lees-aged wine delivered dried mango, apricot and marmalade aromas with vanilla spice complexity. The pairing of these two wines demonstrated how a single grape can stretch from accessible luxury to premium indulgence.<\/p>\n<h3>Rh\u00f4ne-Style Surprises<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/awards.main.sommelieredit.com\/all-results\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8907 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Rhone-Alternatives-2025.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Rhone-Alternatives-2025.png 980w, https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Rhone-Alternatives-2025-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Rhone-Alternatives-2025-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/a>The Rh\u00f4ne Classics category yielded geographical curveballs. Merum Priorati\u2019s Inici 2022 (91 points) from Spain brought soft plum, dark fruit and warming spice. Yet it was Australia\u2019s Jaraman Shiraz 2021 (93 points) which claimed Best By The Glass, admired for its varietal clarity, fine spice and length. Judges called it \u2018best red tasted today\u2019 &#8211; proof that Rh\u00f4ne style now belongs to the world.<\/p>\n<h3>The No\/Low Evolution<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/awards.main.sommelieredit.com\/all-results\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8903 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/No-Low-2025.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"980\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/No-Low-2025.png 980w, https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/No-Low-2025-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/No-Low-2025-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/a>Perhaps the biggest surprise came from the No and Low Alcohol category. <a href=\"https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/the-orchard-alchemist\/\">J\u00f6rg Geiger<\/a>\u2019s Blanc de Blanc with Chardonnay (94 points, Best Overall) impressed with sweet aromatics of baked pear and stewed apple, lively bubbles and a golden hue. Judges likened it to \u2018liquid strudel\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This category was packed with innovation: Jacob Kocemba\u2019s BL\u00c5, made with 13 organic teas; BOLLE\u2019s grape-led blends; and Nomora\u2019s Cuv\u00e9e Ros\u00e9 with its extraordinary notes of smoked game and fresh cranberry. The complexity was undeniable. Inurrieta Orchidea Sauvignon Blanc 2024 (90 points, Best Value) was dubbed \u2018amazing by the glass\u2019 and \u2018overdelivering\u2019. At the other end, <a href=\"https:\/\/main.sommelieredit.com\/top-100-sommeliers\/application-form\/excellence-in-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Schloss Johannisberg<\/a>\u2019s Silberlack Riesling Grosses Gew\u00e4chs 2021 (93 points) shone for its precision, purity and pedigree.<\/p>\n<p>This duality &#8211; wines which work commercially versus those which lift a list\u2019s stature &#8211; reflects the daily tightrope walk of the modern sommelier.<\/p>\n<h3>Preservation System Winners<\/h3>\n<p>Juv\u00e9 &amp; Camps also secured both Preservation System awards. The Gran Juv\u00e9 2018 and La Capella 2011 showed that extended lees ageing delivers not just flavour and finesse, but a structure robust enough to thrive under Coravin-style service. These are destination wines by the glass.<\/p>\n<h3>Global Reach, Regional Voice<\/h3>\n<p>Spain led in sparkling, but this wasn\u2019t a monocultural podium. South Africa\u2019s Graham Beck impressed with a Pinot Meunier 2022 full of herbal umami and balance, and an Ultra Brut 2018 with buttered brioche and citrus zip &#8211; one judge gave it 100 points.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Prophet\u2019s Rock Pinot Gris from New Zealand brought oily texture and nutty nuance; a Gr\u00fcner Veltliner from Austria\u2019s old vines offered classic white pepper and blossom tones. Even as winemaking globalises, terroir still speaks.<\/p>\n<h3>Group Dining Winners<\/h3>\n<p>Two wines stood out for their adaptability. Spier Cap Classique 2021 showed savoury complexity and fine mousse, while Bolney Wine Estate\u2019s Classic Cuv\u00e9e won favour for its balanced acidity and food pairing potential &#8211; especially with seasonal vegetables.<\/p>\n<h3>Our Verdict<\/h3>\n<p>These awards reflect a trade in motion: adventurous, pragmatic, and open-minded. The wines which rose to the top weren\u2019t always the most obvious, but they had something to say &#8211; a sense of place, a point of view, and a reason to be poured.<\/p>\n<p>In the autumn, we introduce a new category: \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/awards.main.sommelieredit.com\/award-categories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cellar Secret<\/a>\u2019 &#8211; wines and non-alcoholic alternatives with modest pricing but standout character. These are the quiet stars of a wine list: accessible to buy, persuasive to sell at a deserving price, and easy to love.
